Is anybody there? The classic storytelling moment when a character enters a building, unsure if it is empty. The musical score evaporates. The tension builds. They tread slowly, pausing and holding their breath. A smashed door frame hangs off its hinges. Is there a burglar still inside? Or it could be a moss covered window, prised open in a post apocalyptic wasteland as they search for scarce resources, praying that the shadows don’t hide a terrible threat. It could be a police officer, gun at the ready looking for a suspect who might be violent, ready to flee, asleep…..or already dead?
EMPTY PRESENCE is the minimal powerhouse library - full of small detailed sounds that empty buildings make, that might suggest humans inside - or not. Small cracks, structural expansions, pressure changes, suggestions of movement, ambiguous but physical, window knocks, distant real steps in corridors, neighbours talking through walls, warehouse roofs ticking, wooden shutters drumming in the wind (but without the wind). Not useless room tones, not hokey horror cliches, but tense sonic moments to bring any drama to life as we connect directly to our character's perception.
